Amy L. Gilliland, Ph.D., CD(DONA) is a DONA approved doula trainer, and a certified childbirth educator through ALACE.  She is certified as a doula through DONA, and has been attending births off and on for over eighteen years. She is the founder of Doulas of Southcentral Wisconsin (DSW) and a past member of the Board of Directors of Doulas of North America (DONA).

Amy's research specialties include the interactions of doulas and mothers and fathers during labor, and the role of doula care in our modern obstetrical system.  Her degrees are in Human Development and Family Studies from the UW-Madison where her focus was in perinatal psychology. She has interviewed doulas from all over the United States and Canada about labor support, and parents from three different states about their experiences with doulas.  Her research on doula care is truly groundbreaking. Amy is a professional speaker and published author of many articles about doulas and birth, including Midwifery, the Journal of Perinatal Education (JPE), the Journal of Obstetrical, Gynecological and Neonatal Nursing (JOGNN), and the International Doula.   Amy is on the psychology faculty at a local college where she teaches human sexuality and psychology courses.

She has also conducted and presented original research in women's sexuality; and conducts seminars for family visitors on developing parental sensitivity in at risk parent populations.  She lives in Madison, Wisconsin and has three young adult children.
