Research & Expertise

My current research interests involve:
  • The processes of labor support – what actually happens in human interaction that affects birth outcomes?
  • Patient ergonomics – including the interpersonal dynamics of nurse-patient relationships
  • Birth doula support – improving doula curriculum and building adaptable doula communities through the support and development of new doulas in underserved or marginalized populations.
  • Fathers’ experiences in the perinatal period – the role they play in birth support, family dynamics, and the full spectrum of the birthing experience.
  • The interpersonal neurobiology of trauma and healing – and the role it plays in laboring patient needs, the way they develop relationships with providers, and how it can affect the birthing experience.
  • Attachment needs – of the laboring person or mother and later parenting.
  • Women’s experiences of female ejaculation – and the spectrum of human sexuality.
  • Sensory Processing Disorders – as they relate to experiences of pain and pleasure.

Research Methods & Background

As a qualitative researcher, I utilize a variety of analytic methods, usually grounded theory or hermeneutic theme analysis when looking at micro level interactions. Recently, I completed an ethnography of the inpatient hospitalization experience. From a macro perspective, I utilize system approaches.

My research background is interdisciplinary but is heavily influenced by a human ecology model. In that model, people need to be studied in relationship to others or their environment to gain a critical understanding of a phenomena. Attachment theory and a developmental perspective also influence my frameworks.
